This thesis examines conflict resolution and peacemaking within an Islamic context with a special focus on the conflict resolution aspects of Prophet Muḥammad's life, from the perspective of conflict resolution and peace studies. It specifically seeks to find answers for the following main question:“What were the approaches, methods and principles used by Prophet Muḥammad towards conflicts during his life time?”. The thesis examines the Prophet's conflict resolution and peacemaking in three main areas: Conflict resolution between Muslims and pagans of Mecca; conflict resolution among Muslims; and conflict resolution between Muslims and Jews of Medina. Using an interdisciplinary approach drawn from the social sciences, in particular sociology, political science, history and Islamic sciences, I will examine Prophet Muḥammad's methods for dealing with conflict and how it might be understood in relation to the principles of conflict resolution and peace studies. The findings generated from the research questions provide ample evidence that the prophetic tradition and culture present solid principles for contemporary conflict resolution and peacemaking practices, which might be implemented by today's Muslims. From the evidence we can derive from recorded narratives of the issues, it appears Prophet Muḥammad used a very broad spectrum of conflict resolution methods and processes to resolve conflicts among Muslims and between Muslim and non-Muslim communities. The approaches, methods and principles of the Prophet in resolving conflicts include: good intentions and relations, patience, forgiveness, brotherhood, avoidance (withdrawing), dialogue, diplomacy, reconciliation (ṣulḥ), treaties, mediation, arbitration and coercion. This study demonstrates that Prophet Muḥammad, as a leader of the Muslims, was compassionate, patient and tolerant when dealing with conflicts among Muslims. This attitude was also observed to a significant degree in the resolution of the conflicts of the Muslim community with the polytheists of Mecca or the Jews of Medina. The findings derived from these different instances of conflict recorded in the sacred and historical texts present a very varied set of principles for resolving conflicts. These principles of Prophet Muḥammad may offer effective solutions for current conflicts in Muslim communities. The principles can also assist future Muslim decision-makers who may face similar kinds of conflicts. Furthermore, the findings of the study can serve as a“blueprint”for the management and resolution of conflicts involving arrange of global issues.
