Enterprise resource planning systems have become more and more popular across many industries. Today, organisations invest serious amount of money to design and implement these systems. From MRP to ERP, these systems changed significantly and became complex software that can provide almost all needs of companies in one system. Today ERP system became a phenomenon for professional business life. For example, SAP which is the market leader in Europe, serves these systems for more than sixty percent of multinational companies. But, every ERP trail does not end with a good story. In fact, Failure rates are significantly high for these projects. Almost 80 percent of ERP project cannot meet organisational requirements or satisfy customers. In ERP implementation history, there exists many bankruptcy, project failures, delays and problems. In addition, at the end of failed projects, all investments made by sponsors are wasted and cannot bring any return to sponsors. The aim of this research was to identify an appropriate process for developing and implementing ERP systems. In details, this project will focus on the reasons of developing and implementing ERP, benefits, dis-benefits of ERP systems, main risk factors in implementation process, critical success factors that project team and manager should consider and finally to identify an appropriate change strategy to support implementation. The study conducted firstly a literature review and then qualitative study by using face-to face interviews with experienced project managers and customers. The implication of this research should lead the ERP project managers and customers involved the ERP implementation process to consider several factors that facilitates implementation and ensures a high performing system both in short and in long run. According to the findings of this study, main recommendations are establishing a clear vision, building a competent team with necessary skills, allocate enough time and resources for project and generate a comprehensive change management plan for these projects.
