Prompted by Elspeth Probyn's provocative question,“What's eating you?”this thesis is a consideration of the alimentary as an ethical heuristic. The Foucaultian ethopoetics of pleasure or the concept of“the care of the self”is utilized in an effort to understand the eating/eaten body, specifically the so-called“eating disordered”and“obese”bodies or what I call non-normative alimentary practices and non-normative bodies herein. Despite the recent plethora of research and interest in non-normative bodies and practices, the dominant etiological paradigm seems to result in either severe pathologization or empty celebration. Following Deleuze and Guattari's Spinozan move, I attempt to look at what bodies do rather than what they are, thereby replacing the etiological paradigm (cause and effect) with an ethological one (action and affect). A review of the dominant medical and academic discourse surrounding non-normative bodies and practices is followed by a discussion of specific technologies of the self based on an interview I conducted with my aunt who has a thought-provoking repertoire of alimentary practices and technologies. Focusing on non-normative alimentary practices in their specificities as everyday technologies of the self can perhaps break the impasse of mind/body, anatomy/culture dualisms and make possible an embodied ethics of becoming.
