Turkey has endeavoured to become a member of the European Union for more than fifty years. Following being a candidate country in 1999, full membership negotiations with EU commenced in 2005. In this process, Turkey has to meet certain political, social and economical criteria that EU stipulates. The issue of irregular migration is covered in the negotiating chapter Justice, Freedom and Security. Because of geographical position of Turkey that is very close the countries which commonly are migrant-sending and the regions in which economic and political conflict and chaos is prevalent , EU has paid particular attention on concluding readmission agreement with Turkey. Turkish officials have had certain justifications on this issue. As a candidate country, Turkey has faced some difficulties on the road of the accession process. EU has pressurized Turkey to conclude the readmission agreement until December of 2013 when readmission agreement between Turkey and EU was signed. Negotiations of this agreement have lasted for more than a decade in which Turkey has been a candidate country. Hence, aim of this study is to search how the readmission issue influences the accession process of Turkey to the European Union.
