In recent years, the telecommunications sector has been competitive both in United Kingdom and the whole world. Telecommunications companies built up huge amounts of debt due to the costs of third generation mobile services. BT was one of the main players in the sector, but also one of those, which was trying to reduce this heavy debt burden. Corporate restructuring was the main remedy for BT. BT decided to restructure itself in April 2000. The restructuring of BT consisted mainly of changes in the management team, spin-offs and new capital infusion a through rights issue. The debt-reducing program also involved divestitures, including disposals and sale of stakes in different companies. The Board of BT, strictly, has been following the stages of the restructuring agenda and trying to take each necessary step for the completion of a successful programme. Most of these phases have had a positive market reaction, e.g the 90% take up of the rights and the appointment of Sir Christopher Bland as chairman. However, the market did not seem to like the joint announcement of the rights issue and the demerger of BT Wireless and the resignation of Sir Ian Vallance. From our point of view, the target of reducing debt by December 2001 as £ 10 billion seems to be reasonable with all these precautious steps.
