Özet (Çeviri)

The aim of the current study is to investigate implicit and explicit attitudes towards transgendered individuals, regarding the effects of culture and gender. In study 1, Genderism and the Transphobia Scale, and two different versions of Social Distance Scale were used to examine cultural and gender influence on attitudes toward transgender individuals by using 199 participants (119 females, 80 males). It was found that culture had an effect on attitudes, and that participants from Europe and Turkey had more positive attitudes toward transgender individuals than Asian participants. Gender influence on attitudes toward transgender individuals was also found, although this was not as strong as cultural influence. Study 2 was a type of pilot study with 48 participants (28 female, 20 male) from the first study. Culture and gender effects on implicit and explicit attitudes toward transgender individuals were investigated as in Study 1. In addition to the scales in the first study, IAT was also used to explore implicit attitudes, by using a different style. The same results were found related to culture and gender effects on attitudes. However, there were no gender or cultural influences on IAT. In both studies, implicit and explicit attitudes of the individuals toward transgender individuals were not differentiated from each other. These findings may provide a basis for future research, in order to explain possible reasons for transphobia, and a way to deal with this problem across all cultures.
