Music and its emotions were a subject of research for a very long time, and it's a complicated field, since musical structures cannot be easily translated to emotional human responses. Apart from the musical features, other variables also play a part in the responses, culture being an important one of them. Although there are not any immediate and easy explanations of exactly how humans are able to perceive emotions in music, valuable insights could be gained through studying a wide variety of cultures. This thesis has a strict focus on harmony, among all features of music. An experiment was made to observe the universal recognition of certain harmonies, and how culture or musical features alter humans' emotions. Listeners from different cultures were subjected to a number of Western chord progressions, each differing in terms of progression, harmonic mode and dissonance, and rated their emotions in terms of valence and arousal. Results show that there are indeed a universal recognition of emotions conveyed by Western harmonies, and culture is linked to familiarity when emotions are taken into account, where valence values converge to the middle as culture steps away from Western.
