People sometimes predict their motivation regarding future events and they make a judgement about how much they would be motivated or bored. People's predictions towards future events are not always correct. They can overestimate or underestimate their motivation. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether people would overestimate their motivation on a 20-minute boring task. Participants were 63 undergraduate and postgraduate students (32 male, 31 female Mage = 27.1, SD = 5.2) at the University of Reading. Participants were randomly allocated to two conditions (experiencing and forecasting n = 31, 32, respectively). Participants in both condition performed the task. However, while forecasters made a judgement after practice trials about how they would feel after the main task, the experiencers did not make any judgements during the experiment. Both groups showed their actual motivation at the end of the experiment. Participants' judgement (predicted motivation) was compared with their actual motivation. The results illustrated that participants in the same group (forecasting condition) overestimated their motivation. However, forecasters' predicted motivation did not significantly differ from experiencers' actual motivation. According to the results, there might also be a strong association between motivation and boredom due to the fact that while boredom was increasing, motivation decreased.
