We study the classical problems of the calculus of variations which is one of the most fundamental field of the mathematical analysis related extremal problems. The mat hematica! techniques that have been developed to dea! with such problems have a sigııificant importance and mostly used in physics, engineering, and all branches of mathematics. Mainly we consider two methods, namely the classical and the direct methods. The first one consists, if the functional is continuously differentiable then by analyzing the higher derivatives we determine if the the solution is a minimum, a maximum or just stationary point. In the latter method we consider a minimizing sequence then if this sequence is compact and the functional is lower semicontinuous means that there exists a minimizer of metremal problem. In particnlar the thesis will include the following topics: Sobolev spaces, same basic definitions and theorems about weak solutions, existence and uniqueness for minimizers and some well known examples about geometrical aspects of the calculus of variations: the Brachistochrone problem, the minimal surface of revolution problem.
