Özet (Çeviri)

The imposition of Mongol political authority över the Seljuk realms of Anatolia during the mid-thirteenth century brought about vast changes not only in the demographics of the region, but also in its political structures and culture. This dissertation studies the dynamics of early Mongol rule in Seljuk Anatolia by examining the various ways the Seljuk polity negotiated with, resisted and accommodated their Mongol conquerors and overlords. It argues that mid- to late thirteenth-century Seljuk Anatolia needs to be viewed as an integral part of the Mongol empire rather than as an isolated entity. Likewise it demonstrates how regional conflict arising from the demographic and political realignment in western Asia related to the foundation of and territorial claims of the Ilkhanate (1260-1335) had direct repercussions on the political order of Anatolia. The question in particular of how Mongol rule changed the nature of factional politics at the Seljuk court as a result of the transformation of the sultanate as a political institution under Mongol domination informs the reconstruction of political narrative. This study concludes with an examination of Ibn Bıbi's al-Avâmir al-caliyya fı'l-umür al-aliyya (composed 1282), the only extant Anatolian Seljuk dynastic history produced in the thirteenth-century and the main source for the pre- Mongol period of Seljuk Anatolia. The implications of writing Seljuk dynastic history at a time when the Seljuk sultanate had been rendered defunct as a political and military institution are considered. By addressing questions of patronage as well as the rhetorical and ideological elements of the work, the socio-religious and political context of the composition of Ibn Bibı's history are scrutinized. Through my examination of Ibn Bîbı's local Anatolian historical work produced in the Ilkhanid period under the auspices of Juvaynı patronage, I attempt to shed light on the complicated and controversial role of the Juvaynı brothers in administering the Ilkhanate and its provinces as well as asserting authority and power as Muslims in the name of their pagan Mongol masters.
