This dissertation examines the impact of globalization on security, and the shift in security policies of the states in developed and developing countries. Globalization impacted on developed and developing countries differently. In accordance with globalization, the nature of warfare has also changed. Contemporary security threats involve non-state actors as well as state actors. Especially in developing countries, nonstate actors heavily involved in conflicts and undermined the authority of the state remarkably after the ending of the Cold War. After the Cold War, interstate wars have declined dramatically because of the pacifying effects of globalisation, interconnectedness of the trade between countries and international human right norms. However, the negative side of globalisation has increased also the capabilities of nonstate actors inside of the developing countries and non-state actors challenged the authority of the state in unprecedented scale. Non-state actors benefitted the tools of globalization and their influence has transcended the national boundaries and posed threat to global security at the same time. The developed countries tried to cut off the influence of illegal groups in the developing world through military force and development programmes, however the instability continues to overwhelm the developing world. Because the contemporary conflicts target populations, the efforts by developed countries should also aim to eradicate these threats against populations. In this sense, human security provides comprehensive approach to current security threats. Implementing human security in developing countries with unselective policies is obligation rather than a choice for international community to achieve global security. The study concluded that globalisation has had impact on security in several ways. In developing countries, globalisation has undermined the authority of the state. However the state remains as the sole representative in international relations. Because even the local conflicts in developing world can influence global stability with interconnectedness of the countries, developments in technology and eased transportation, there is no local conflict that only affects the country that conflicts take place. In this respect, the international community has obligation to interfere in local conflicts in developing countries to protect people from suffering and provide global peace.
