Long-range interactions, which are missing in density functional theory due to the local nature of the functionals used in the calculations, are challenging to deal with accurately and computationally. In this thesis, two di erent methods to approximate dispersion correction is proposed and tested. We present a charge model for atom-in-molecules which estimates partial charges, dipoles and dipole polarizabilities respectively. Their rst hand calculations manifest existence of enough arguments to compute dispersion coe cients. That approach requires no partitioning on electron density and is shown to be sourced by the essence of di erence in electronegativities and besides valid for diatomic systems as well as polyatomics. Finally, we present a damping function for dispersion correction schemes called linear soft damping (lsd), based on the analysis of current damping functions and energetics of dispersion corrections. This function damps the asymptotic curve more softly than existing damping functions, attempting to minimize the usual overcorrection in dispersion energy and improve the description of the missing nonlocal correlation in semilocal density functionals. In addition, we demonstrate that lsd damping su ers less from over tting problem than conventional damping functions, especially in the presence of an additional higher order correction term.
