SUMMARY The aim of this study is to show the effects of the unification in Germany, the European Community and also the world. Germany was divided after the Second World War. The two German states belonged to diametrically opposed camps. The Federal Republic of Germany in the west and the German Democratic Republic in the east had different systems of government, economic systems, armies and alliances. This state of divison ended on October 3, 1990, when the German Democratic Republic acceded to the Federal Republic and thus, 41 years after its founding, ceased to exist. There are three chapters in the study. The historical events about Germany after the Second World War, the establishment of the EC and the events before the unification are examined in the first chapter. Germany's war enemies divided this country in 1945. The aim was to stamp out National Socialism and militarism and give the German people a chance, according to the Postdam Agreement of 2 August 1945, to rebuild society on the foundations of democracy and peace. 221Before the 1990 'ş, the relations between West Germany and East Germany was in the acceptable level. But, East Germany had some economic and social problems because of the administration faults. After the opening of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 East Germany collapsed with breathtaking speed and less than one year after the peaceful overthrow of communism the country was re-united with West Germany. In a decisive step at the end of February 1990, Chancellery Kohl's coalition government offered the still semi- communist East German Government an economic and currency union, an offer, which was accepted. Soon after that on March 18, 1990 East Germans voted in their first and last democratic election as citizens of a separate country. Meanwhile work was being completed on the Unification Treaty which was signed by both Governments on August 31 one week after the East German Parliament had voted to accede to West Germany. The only remaining political problem to resolve was the foreign policy implications of German unity. This was achieved in the so-called“2 plus 4”talks between the two Germanies and the World War II victors. All international treaties entered into by West Germany-including all related to NATO and the EC-were extended to eastern Germany. 222SUMMARY The aim of this study is to show the effects of the unification in Germany, the European Community and also the world.
