Özet

ÖZET Bu çalışmada İngiltere'de Onaltıncı yüzyılın son döneminde yazılmış olan iki tiyatro eseri, yazarı belli olmayan Jack Straw' m Hayatı ve ölümü, ve William Shakespeare ' in tarih oyunlarından VI. Henry nin ikinci bölümü ele alınmıştır. Her iki oyunda da köylüler ve fakir halk tarafından gerçekleştirilen iki ortaçağ isyanı konu edilmektedir. Bu tezin amacı oyunlardaki isyan temasının araştırılmasıdır. Oyunların analizinde 1980 lerin sonlarında ortaya çıkmış olan iki eleştiri yönteminden yararlanılmıştır:Amerika Birleşik devletlerinde ortaya çıkan“Yeni Tarihçilik”ve ingiltere de Marxist edebiyat eleştirisinin uzantısı olarak gelişen“kültürel maddecilik”edebiyat eserlerinde evrensel gerçekler aramaya yönelik idealist eleştiriye karşı çıkar, ve edebiyat eserlerini tarihsel bir bağlama oturtmayı amaçlarlar. Oyunların analizinde özellikle yararlandığımız“kültürel maddecilik”Onaltıncı yüzyıl ingiliz tiyatrosunda devlet ideolojisine karşı oldukça eleştirisel tutumlar sergilendiğini ileri sürer. Bu çalışmada sözkonusu iki oyunda sergilenen problemlerin aslında Elizabeth çağı fakir halkının onaltıncı yüzyılda hızla gelişen kapital izimin etkisiyle içine düşmüş oldukları durumla yakından ilintili olduğu görülmüş, bu problemlerin ifade edilişi ve devletin sosyal düzeni korumaya yönelik ideolojisinin oyunlarda sergilenişi araştırılmıştır.

II ABSTRACT This thesis makes an analysis of two plays that belong to the last decade of the sixteenth century: The anonymous Life and Death of Jack Straw and Shakespeare ' s 2 Henry VI. In both plays we are presented with a revolt by the lower classes and the aim of this thesis is to investigate the representation of rebellion in the plays. In this analysis, the ideas of two contemporary critical theories have been used. New historicism and cultural materialism that came into existence at the end of the 1980s took a stand against idealist criticism which searched in works of literature the representation of eternal and timeless human values. Both theories want to place literature into its historical context from which, they assert, it has emanated. In this study, the perspective of cultural materialism has especially been used in analyzing the pi ays. Cultural materialism argues that sixteenth century English drama presents us with critical attitudes towards the state authority - attitudes which can be called subversive. In this study, it has been shown that the reasons that cause the revolt of the lower classes in the plays and their problems are in close connection with those of the Elizabethan lower classes whose condition has been worsened by the growing capitalism which widened theIll rift between the rich and the poor. The way these problems are articulated in the plays is searched and the representation of the state ideology which tries to secure the dominant social order is examined.
