Özet
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to develop a unified approach to the analysis of sentence topic in Turkish simplex sentences. The analysis makes reference to the three broad areas of linguistic research, namely, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Functional approach to language universals form the theoretical foundations of the present study. In this respect, the study does not follow the principles of a specific functional grammar model but employs the terms and concepts of different functional approaches to language. Introduction sets the major goals and limitations of the study. The basic assumptions of the study and the way this study perceives the notion of sentence topic are formulated in this section. Chapter I reviews the approaches to the notion of topic. It starts with identifying the place of functional grammar within the general framework of functionalism in linguistics. Different conceptions of the notion of topic and their evaluation follow the arguments concerning functional approach to language. This section also includes the strategies involved in the identification of sentence topic and concludes that the notion of topic can best be understood with reference to the notion of“aboutness”. A brief review of the typologies which classify languages in terms of topic marking properties is also presented in this section. This chapter also introduces the notion of basic order and the proposals relating the human cognitive processes with the conditions on the ordering sentential constituents. Chapter II concerns the semantic properties of the nominals in general and tries to identify the semantic properties which topic NPs areABSTRACT The aim of this study is to develop a unified approach to the analysis of sentence topic in Turkish simplex sentences.
