SUMMARY The city of Ankara has a historical and strategic importance as being a connection point for the main roads reaching to the city from north, south, west and from the eastern regions. Prehistoric footprints from ancient centruies are seen at Etiyokuşu and Ergazi. and the sites like Ahlatlibeli and Koçumbeli are known as source of Chalcolithic period. The most imporant sites are from Frigs and Hittites. A large number of Frig tumuli appearing at this region is an indication of the importance of the Frig settlement between the years of BC. 750-500. Later on the city went under the domination of Galats and Romans, important buildings constructed in this period are Ankara Augustus temple; it has a pseudodipteros plan and its world famous with the testament of Augustus carved on it's walls, Roman baths made in the period of Caracalla, the theatre showing Roman architectural specialties is dated to the 1. century's 2. half and the citadel of Ankara that has several inhabitances after the Galat's settlement. The citadel has divided as inner and outer citadels. Exept these buildings, Romans constructed new roads after every conquer made by the Roman Army.As a result of this Romans had had a sophisticated road network. This road network was a necessity for militaristic and administritive aims. These roads are constructed after the Kingdom of Bergamum's inharitance to Rome, in the mean time the water system that is very sophisticated reflects us the advancement appearing in the period. There are also Roman columns, statues, tombs and lots of coins amoung the other finds coming out from the region. F HF nsTT?T? "W '!
