This master thesis primarily intends to clarify the theoretical framework of the historian Arthur M. Schlesinger's enduring concept“imperial presidency”and to analyze whether the Obama administration fits into this conceptualization. In the thesis, the imperial presidency case is built upon a separate ground other than the natural accretion in the executive power. The basic criterion in the analysis of this distinction is, particularly from the Cold War and by abusing emergency powers, American presidents' claim to inherent powers in the Presidency, which are beyond the Constitution. In this basic framework, it is assessed that the imperial presidency manifests itself in the fields as executive war-making power, executive secrecy and the use of emergency powers for political gains. The remarks of presidents and high officials in their administrations, and legal and political documents reflecting the policies and tendencies of the concerned offices of the president are used as primary sources in the thesis. In addition, the works of Schlesinger who first put forward the theory of imperial presidency, other academic studies on the theory, and finally the historical records and analysis pertaining to the administrations of American presidents Harry Truman, Richard M. Nixon and George W. Bush as projections to Obama Era are included.
