The effects of trait mindfulness on sensory and emotional aspects of pain and the functional connectivity of trait mindfulness: An fMRI study

Trait mindfulness is an individual difference which can influence both sensory and emotional aspects of pain (Petter et al., 2013). The first aim of the current study was to examine the relationship between trait mindfulness, pain threshold and pain catastrophizing. The second aim was to investigate individuals' different trait mindfulness levels by examining their default mode network (DMN) connectivity. Sixty-nine healthy adult completed pain catastrophizing and trait mindfulness questionnaires and participated in thermal stimulation test and, three of them were excluded. Forty of total participants participated the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) sessions, and five of them were excluded. A precuneus region of interest (ROI) connectivity analysis was used to identify the correlated DMN regions with mindfulness. The results of the questionnaires and thermal stimulation showed that there was a significant positive correlation between trait mindfulness and pain threshold scores, and a significant negative correlation between trait mindfulness and pain catastrophizing and between pain catastrophizing and pain threshold scores. According to fMRI analyses results, connectivities between the ROI and precuneus, posterior cingulate cortex, postcentral/precentral gyrus and cerebellum were positively correlated with trait mindfulness scores. Also, connectivities between the ROI and cingulate, paracingulate, and superior frontal gyrus, medial frontal cortex and the frontal pole were negatively correlated with the trait mindfulness scores. Our results are the new findings in the related literature, and they might expand the knowledge of mindfulness mechanism and its relation to pain; thus this might contribute to pain management programs in the clinical field.
