This dissertation analyzes the role of Bulgaria and Romania in Turkey's broader security interests in the Balkans. In this context, the notion of 'role' refers to the importance of these countries on Turkey's security agenda. Placing this framework at the centre of the research, the turning point of relations between Turkey and these countries can be claimed to have started with the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact. Bulgaria and Romania's need for a new collective security organization coincided with Euro-Atlantic integration plans towards the Balkans. Turkey, as being both a Balkan state and NATO member, wanted to utilize the integration of the Balkans with Euro-Atlantic structures. That is why, three main reasons are put forward to explain Turkish support for these countries' NATO accession: Security interests, domesticforeign politics and economic-trade benefits. It is stated that NATO membership of these countries enabled Turkey to cooperate further with Romania and Bulgaria in security matters, such as terrorism, energy security and ethnic conflicts. Besides, engaging of these countries in NATO gave Turkey an advantage of increasing its allies in NATO and Black Sea affairs. Lastly, it is pointed out that there is a positive correlation between Turkey's support for security reassurance in NATO and mutual economic gains. In conclusion, it is argued that despite Turkey's win-win based support strategy, there can be further negative implications of these countries' NATO memberships on regional basis.
