The St. Nicholas Church in Demre or Kale (Myra), a town of Antalya has a very important place in Byzantine architectural development. According to the historical sources, St. Nicholas was a bishop and died in Myra and his tomb was built in the same place. Afterwards, a church was built on or around his tomb. Three different building phases have been discovered during the works carried out at the church, according to the plan types, building techniques and materials. The plan type of the first bulding dating from 6th century is unknown but estimated as vaulted basilica. The second phase, dated 8th- 9th centuries, shows a domed basilica plan type. During the last renovation of the church, which took place in the 11th century, the annex buildings have been added to the north and south of the church. The church has a special importance with its tomb and its transformation into a monastery complex by the additional buildings attached to the main structure. A3 it is known, the liturgical furniture of a church such as templon, ambo, solea, altar ciborium were essential in the Byzantine architecture. The fragments of the liturgical furniture of St. Nicholas Church, are now located at the atrium and in the gallery of the church. There are some examples which have been used as spoli in the building, though not numerous, some pieces have been found in situ. Certain specimens of the furniture on the other hand, have been transported to the Archeological Museum in Antalya. The architectural sculptures which have been found since 1989, during the excavations lead by Prof. Dr.iv Yıldız Ö tüten, introduced ne7*7 opinions to the liturgieal fumiture of the building» This present stııdy includes the documentation and description of the liturgical furniture fragments of the St. Nicholas. Church» Besidea, it attempts to solve the dating problems of the pieces, to interpret the functions of them in the ceremonies, and to suggest restitutional proposals for their original appearence by comparing them with contemporary Bysantine examples.
