In late eighteenth-century France, Neoclassicism took over Rococo in a cultural shift that occurred in parallel to the French Revolution. The current interpretation of this shift within the emerging field of 'Sensory Studies' is that, as a reaction to the Rococo sensuality associated with the court, French Neoclassicism defended a total abandonment of multi-sensory elements in visual arts and adopted a purely ideological and argumentative style. The present dissertation questions this interpretation. It asks whether a style defined as the visual embodiment of such a physically and psychologically violent era as the French Revolution can avoid multi-sensory effects in the communication of a panoply of complex messages to a public in metamorphosis. Dying Gestures argues that the constant social and political changes of the Revolution caused a proliferation of corporal and sensory motifs that are visible in the visual culture of the age. As an artist directly implicated in the political scene of the Revolution, Jacques-Louis David's works from the early years of the Revolution provide the most poignant examples to the case. Specifically, this dissertation analyzes David's portraits of three Jacobin martyrs: Lepeletier, Marat and Bara. To do so, it proposes a model for the analysis of kinesthetic, tactile, vestibular and visceral effects in visual representation. Dying Gestures aims to demonstrate that these martyrdom-pictures communicate a haptic pathos to the beholder. Finally, it concludes that David's haptic strategy lies in his (both politically and aesthetically) revolutionary reshaping of the foundational principle of History painting: conveying content by the effective representation of significant moment and dramatic gesture.
