Özet
Bu tezde Richard Knolles'in The Generall History of the Turkes'ün (Türklerin Genel Tarihi) The Generall History of the Turkes, from the first beginning of that Nation to the rising of the Othoman Familie: with all the notable expeditions of the Christian Princes against them (Türklerin Genel Tarihi; Osmanli Hanedanliğindan Öncesi ve Hristiyan Prenslerin Türklere Karşi Yaptiklari Önemli Bütün Seferler) adlı ilk bölümü Türkçeye çevrilmekle beraber eser içindeki isimler bölümlerle beraber analiz edilmiştir. Tez içinde ayrıca Richard Knolles'un hayatı ve eserleri de verilmiştir, ancak tezin büyük bir kısmı eserin ilk bölümünü kapsayacaktır. Eserin bu ilk bölümünde Knolles, Türklerin tarihe ilk çıkışını, ilk anayurtlarını, Anadolu'ya göçünü araştırmasında kullandığı kaynaklara göre yorumlamış, ancak eserinde özellikle de Orta Doğu'daki Türk devletleri ve Sarazenler üzerine yapılan haçlı seferleri ağırlıklı bir şekilde anlatılmıştır. Richard Knolles, 16. Yy'da Kent eyaletinin Sandwich kasabasında yaşamış bir akademisyendir. Hayatının büyük bir bölümünü Sandwich içinde bulunan bir okulun müdürü olarak geçirmiştir. Bulunduğu okulun destekçisi Knolles'u Avrupalı kaynakları kullanıp düzenleyerek onun kariyerinin en büyük eseri olan The Generall History of the Turkes'ü meydana getirmesi için teşvik ve yardımlarda bulunmuştur. Bu eser Türkler hakkında İngilizce yazılan en büyük ilk eser sayılmaktadır ve 1200 sayfadan oluşmaktadır. İlk basımı 1603'te yapılan bu eser İngiliz entelektüel camiasında pek popüler oldu. Sonrasındaki senelerde de yeni bilgiler eklenerek eserin yeni baskıları yapıldı. Bu tez 1603 yılında basılan ilk baskısı üzerinde yapılmış bir çalışmadır. Burada eserin ilk bölümü analiz edilecek ve Türkçeye anlamlar bozulmadan aktarılarak sunulacaktır.

In this thesis Richard Knolles's The Generall History of the Turkes's first chapter named The Generall History of the Turkes, from the first beginning of that Nation to the rising of the Othoman Familie: with all the notable expeditions of the Christian Princes against them is translated into Turkish and the names appeared in the work along with the chapter are analyzed. There will be also information about Richard Knolles' life and works, though it is mostly on his work's first chapter. This chapter includes the supposed genesis of the Turks, their first homeland, their migration into Anatolia, according to Knolles' research and it mostly includes the crusades embarked upon Turkish states and unto the Saracens in the Levant. Richard Knolles was a 16th century scholar lived in Sandwich, Kent, and he served as a school master for most of his life. The patron of his school encouraged him commit this enterprise which was to arrange known European sources about the Turks and create this work named The Generall History of the Turkes. This work was the first largest one that was written about the Turks in English with the number of 1200 folios. Once its first edition was published in 1603, it became very popular among the English society and more editions were printed in later years with extra information. This thesis is about the first edition that was published in 1603. Here, the first chapter of the same edition will be analyzed and faithfully translated into Turkish.
