ABSTRACT Surname: Özgün(Özel) - Name: Nurgül - Subject of the thesis: The Anthropomorphic statuettes in third millenium B.C. in Anatolia - Master Degree Thesis - Advisor: Prof.Dr. Aykut Çınaroğlu - Pages of Thesis: l-XXII; 1-96 ; 1-29 (Plates). The basic form of anthropomorphic figurines in third millenium B.C., named as Early Bronze Age in Anatolia are idols. The human figurines of this age, which were being produced mostly as female symbols and made according to the belief of fertility and reproduction, are schematical descriptions. In Anatolia the human figurines which are penetrated as it is seen and in natural shapes since Neolithic period, transformed into full stylized and in abstractionized human figures during Early Bronze Age. All of the above figures could be interpreted such as 'Supreme Deity1 in local pantheons. A 'Mother Goddess1 cult which took its place even in the earliest religions, was dominant and kept its continuity; even sometimes nomi nated variously, in the religious history of Anatolia, Near East and Aegean. In the descriptive figurines of Mother Goddess, the pubic area which was emphasized by a large triangle, the breasts and the hips were the characteristical symbols of motherhood and femininity have been exagge ratedly illustrated. They have been usually put in graves especially in children graves together with other burial gifts. They were found also in the rooms of private houses other than the graves and were also excavated in places outside the houses. These works were manufactured of materials such as baked clay, stone, marble, bone, bronze, gold, silver and electron. Most of the Protohistorical Anatolian figurines of religious meanings and linked to 'Great Mother Goddess' cult, represents a greater deity. Anatolian figurines rather than being separate goddesses, are the depicts in various forms of the Mother Goddess. They are works signifying to an era of a templeless religion. The cultures in various regions of Anatolia, are each a native and real Anatolian culture, which have been developed separately. The outer forces, the interactions among each other, and immigrations in and out have not effected the separate development of these cultures, but in all the characteristical real Anatolian features remained dominant. 95 A fltoEKDSfiETift ;-;-;i£LJ mmi
