Özet

Study Design: Quasi experimental pre-test post-test design Objective: To examine the effects of a six-week upper-extremity plyometric exercise program on throwing velocity of male youth baseball players. Background: Year round participation in individual sports and the use of higher level strength training programs for performance enhancement has become more common in young athletics. Plyometric training is a method of strength training that was developed to improve sport specific function and has been found to be effective in adult population and youth populations for the lower extremities. However, no current evidence exists to support the use of plyometric training in a youth population for upper extremity function such as throwing velocity. Methods: 24 – 30 male baseball players ages 10 – 12 were recruited from two select level teams (12-15 each team) as a sample of convenience. One team was designated as the experimental group (UP group – upper-extremity plyometric group) and one served as a comparison group (COMP group). Prior to the start of the intervention and at the completion of the experimental phase, both groups' baseline throwing velocity was measured using a radar gun. 6 randomly chosen members of the experimental group team participated in a supervised upper-extremity plyometric strength training program two times per week for 6 weeks, as well as a parent supervised home exercise program to be performed one time per week and checked and signed on a completion log. The comparison group, consisting of 6 randomly chosen members of the comparison group team, completed their usual practice routine. The experimental group team consisted of 11 players with the other 5 players randomly assigned to a concurrent experiment focusing on core strength for throwing velocity change, against the results of the comparison Upper-Body Plyometric Program on Throwing Velocity 2 group team. Paired and independent t-tests were utilized to identify within and between group changes from pre to post-test for the plyometric and comparison group only. Results: The difference between pre and post-test throwing velocity for the UP group was found to be significantly different when compared to the pre and post-test throwing velocity of the COMP group. It is also notable that at pre-test the mean throwing velocity values between the two groups was found significantly different, but at the posttest data collection the mean values were no longer significantly different. This shows that at pre-test the COMP group had a much higher average throwing velocity of participants when compared to the UP group, but at post-test the values between groups were much closer as the UP group had caught up in throwing velocity readings. Through SPSS statistical analyses, a positive relationship was found between the intervention and throwing velocity.
