91 ABSTRACT This research has been carried out to test whether making use of creative drama or traditional theatre class is more effective on developing verbal communication skills of teacher candidates. In the research, teacher candidates were tested about their verbal communication skills, phonology, semantics, prosodical perularities and non verbal communication. The research was carried out in 1996-1997 school year among 72 students in Anadolu University Education Faculty. In establishing the experiment and control groups, the impartial nomination method was applied. In collecting data phase of the research, an observation form was developed in order to measure the subjects verbal communication systems. After giving the last shape of the observation form on the basis of the views of the experts some further studies have been carried out for validity and reliability of the form. The observation form was formed by fourteen element which were seperated in to four parts that include phonology, semantic, prosodical pecularities and non verbal communication. This measuring intermediary was applied to experiment and control groups as pre- and post-test. For the purpose of the research the experiment group was taught using creative drama in theatre class where as control group was taught using traditional way. At the same time, a syllabus was prepared for the experiment group and they followed this syllabus. This application lasted 25 weeks and at the end of the practice, post-tests were applied to both groups. After finding out the pre-test and post-test results regarding to control and experiment group, the last data was analysed.92 These are results of this research: 1. A significant difference was diagnosed between the control and the experimental group in terms of verbal communication skills. 2. It was also diagnosed that there was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of improving phonetic, semantic, prosodical phonology skills, and the ability to use non-verbal communication.
