Özet
ECOWAS, bütünleşme çabalarına rağmen bölge içi ticareti hala düşük olan bir bütünleşme örneğidir. Küresel olarak, ECOWAS'ın ihracattaki payı, bölgenin birincil emtia ağırlıklı ticareti ve bir dizi siyasi kaos nedeniyle önemsizliğini korumaktadır. Birincil ürünlerin ihracatı hem uluslararası fiyat istikrarsızlığı hem de gelir, yatırım, tüketim ve en önemlisi ithalat bağımlılığı etkileriyle ECOWAS'ı dış ve iç şoklara karşı duyarlı kılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, farklı araştırmalar farklı sonuçlar ürettiğinden, literatürde ihracata dayalı büyüme (İDBH) ve büyümeye dayalı ihracat hipotezleri (BDİH) ile ilgili tartışmalar devam etmektedir. Bu çalışma, 2000-2019 döneminde ihracatın ECOWAS iktisadi büyümesi üzerindeki etkilerini araştırmak için panel sabit etki modelini kullanmaktadır. Bölgenin büyüme sürecinin belirlenmesinde GSYİH, brüt sermaye oluşumu, ihracat, ithalat, tarım ve enflasyon değişkenlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Modelin tahminine geçmeden önce değişkenlerin durağanlık özellikleri araştırılmış ve bunun için yatay kesit bağımlılığını dikkate alan Peseran'ın CADF testi kulanılmıştır. Sabit etkiler modelinin sonuçları, ihracatın ECOWAS'ın iktisadi büyümesi üzerinde anlamlı bir etkisi olmadığını göstermektedir. Bulgular, ECOWAS iktisadi büyümesi üzerinde, brüt sermaye oluşumu, ithalat ve tarımın pozitif; enflasyonun negatif etkisini ortaya koymaktadır. Bölgenin sürdürülebilir ve istikrarlı büyümesi için işleme tesisleri, modern tarım sistemleri, uygun ulaşım, telekomünikasyon ve enerji sistemlerinin geliştirilmesi; yarı mamul veya mamul ürünlerin ihracata katılması önerilmektedir.

Even with the integration efforts, intra-trade in ECOWAS region is still low. Globally, ECOWAS share of exports remains insignificant due to the region's continuous trade in primary commodities and a series of political upheavals. The export of primary products creates both international price instability and affect domestic income, investment, consumption and most importantly importation of unsubstituted goods which makes ECOWAS susceptible to external and internal shocks. However, the debate of ELGH and GDEH is still open in literature as different research produce different results. Therefore, this thesis uses the panel fixed effect model to investigate the effects of exports on economic growth of ECOWAS for the 2000–2019 period. The study uses a model for ECOWAS with GDP, gross capital formation, exports, imports, agriculture, and inflation in determining the growth process of the region. Before moving on to the estimation of the model, the stationarity properties of the variables were investigated and for this, Peseran's CADF test, which takes into account the horizontal cross-section dependency, was used. The results of the fixed effects model suggested that export does not have a significant impact on the economic growth of ECOWAS. The findings showed that gross capital formation, imports, and agriculture have a positive and significant effect, while inflation has a negative and insignificant effect on the economic growth of ECOWAS. However, the country-specific hypotheses test results suggested different results for different countries. Lastly, the study recommends the region to engage in the exportation of a semi-finished or finished product by constructing processing industries and factories, create modern agriculture systems with irrigation, modern tools, and proper transportation, telecommunication, and energy to have a sustainable economic growth both in the short and long-run.
