m SUMMARY Master Thesis THE HUMAN AND ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY OF MURATÇIK (AŞVAN) PLAIN AND NEAR SURROUNDING İLHAN O?UZ AKDEMİR Fırat University The Institute of Social Sciences 1997, Page: 200 Muratçık (Aşvan) plain and near surrounding is in the Upper Fırat part of the East Anatolia region and is of 30 km. for of nort ment of Elazığ city. It is region surronded by Keban Dam Lake from the nort and by small hills from south east and west. In the east of of studied area, Alaca and Altınkuşak willages are located. The area is occupied with Yeniçubuk and Aydınlar Willages from the west and with Çöteli and Alpağut from the south. The area of the studied region is 108.143 km2. The population of the area shown tendency to increase from 1935 to 1965. In this period both migration from the region can be seen. From 1970's up to today the area has always lozt the population. The most important feature of the area in terms of the population is that a large amount of migration is seen in the summer and winter seasons. Therefore while the population density is quite high in the summer, the region is almost complately left in the winter season. The history of occupation of the region goes up to 4.000 - 5.000 B.C. Several types of permenant or temporarily occupation signs can be seen in the studied area. In the area, there are iskele, bağ evi, ağıl, from tempocacily occupation, meanwhile there are examples of benzinlik, kom, mezraa, districts and willages from the permanent occupations. While 52 percent of the studied area is occupied with pasture ge, 40 percent of the land corresponds to that for agriculture. Various agriculture activities such as grain broad bean vegetables, vegetable gardens, and so on are progressed. However all of these are based on primitive agricultural methods. The basic cattle dealing of the area consists of both big and small catties. Recently, fattening -up stables and chicken farms are seen tincrease in the area. There are also marble processing factories and petrol stations, in the region which contributes to econmy of the region. The investigation of old and new formation of humanity and economical progressions which is to be changed by“Kuzova. Irragation Project”is important from the meassurement point of wiev of variatren This study is coussidered to give insight to guess the negative and opositive effect of the variation by considering the necessities, exppectations and ideas in tha plain. This study has also aimed to give suggestions for the problems of the region by a geographical approximation and then to exract the future results of this variation, to observe and make comparisons. !??-,
