There has been a considerable increase in Augmented Reality (AR) adoption in informal learning environments, such as: museums, art galleries, etc. These institutions can be used to improve the visitors' engagement as well as to enhance the immersive visitor experience. The present study investigates how AR promotes children's engagement in museums and to what extent this engagement relates to the immersive visitor experience. Thus, the current study focuses on the Fabulous Frog AR app which is intended to be used in the Manchester Museum. This app introduced at the European City of Science (ECOS) event on the 27th July 2016. Internal and external data collection was conducted using an observational study of eleven children's interactions with the app at the event, four email interviews with the parents of the children as well as two email interviews with the designers of the application. Findings show that AR is capable of enhancing the children's emotional and behavioural engagement and the immersive visitor experience with technical and pedagogical interactivity, the feedback-based activity, and heightening the sense of excitement, happiness, immersion and so on in the museum environments. On the other hand, a lengthy webpage provided by AR may have negative impact on this engagement.
