Özet
Bu tez, işlevsellikten kendini temsile uzanan süreçte, taş öğesini sanat nesnesi haline getiren unsurlara odaklanır. 21. yüzyıl heykel sanatındaki kullanım şekillerinde öne çıkan yöntemsel farklılıklar doğrultusunda, seçilen sanatçıların yapıtlarında, taşın ikincil bir öge olarak arka planda kalmadığı, ana unsur halini aldığı örnekleri inceler. Birinci bölümde, nesne olarak taşın tanımına ve modernizm öncesi işlenip şekil verilen bir malzeme olarak işlevsel kullanım şekillerine kısaca değinilmiştir. İkinci bölümde, taşın 20. yüzyıl sanat akımları bağlamında işlenip, şekil verilecek bir malzeme olmaktan çıkıp, sanat yapıtında yapısal bir öge olarak kullanılması incelenmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde, taş ögesinin uzak doğu felsefesi bağlamında önemi ve sanat yapıtlarına yansıması örnekler üzerinden ele alınmıştır. Dördüncü bölümde, 21. yüzyıl güncel sanat alanında taş ögesinin kullanım şekli ve sergilenme biçimleri incelenirken, sanatçıların taşı yapıtlarında kullanma amaçlarına değinilmiştir. Taşın, bir çok sanatçının çalışmalarına ilham olmasının altında yatan gücün, malzemesel niteliğin ve formal çeşitliliğin potansiyelinin izleri sürülürken, günümüz sanatsal üretim biçimlerine yansımaları ve kavramsal olarak bir sanat yapıtında vurgulanma nitelikleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu bölümde, taşın ifade biçiminde, bir araç olarak kullanımından kendi kendisini temsil etmesine uzanan izler, sanatçıların kullanım tercihlerinde öne çıkan unsurlar, farklı kullanım şekilleri göz önüne alınarak başlıklar halinde derlenmiştir. Kategoriler, kronolojik bir okuma yerine, yapıtların işaret etmeye çalıştığı meselelere göre eğilimsel açıdan birbirlerini takip eden alternatif bir okuma önerir. Yapılan araştırmaların sonunda, konu ile ilgili ürettiğim eserler, formunu taştan alan, kullanım şekli bakımından hafıza depolama amaçlı kullanılan bir malzemenin potansiyellerini zorlayan çalışmalar olarak tezin sonunda konumlandırılarak, eser metin çalışması olarak tamamlanmıştır.

This thesis paper focuses on the factors that cast the element of stone as an object of art as part of the process that reaches from functionality to self-representation. Based on the methodical differences that stand forth in its use in the 21st-century art of sculpture, the paper inspects sample artworks where the element of the stone does not take the background as an afterthought but stands forth as the primary factor. The definition of stone as an object was provided in the first section, and pre-modernism era functional utilization methods for stone as a material that can be processed and shaped were briefly mentioned. The second section discusses, in the context of 20th-century art movements, how the stone started as a material to be processed and shaped and turned into a structural element of art pieces. The third section discusses the significance of stone in the context of Far East philosophy and its reflections on corresponding artworks. The fourth section evaluates the methods of utilization for the stone and how it is presented in the current art of the 21st century and discusses why artists use it in their pieces. The section traces the potentials of the strength, material properties, and formal varieties of the stone as reasons that make it an inspirational element for numerous artists. The section also discusses the stone's notional reflections on the artistic development forms and the techniques in artworks that emphasize it. The section follows the traces that reach from the“use of stone as a tool”to its“self-representation”by grouping the findings under titles that were compiled considering the primary factors that emerge in utilization preferences of artists, and different potential uses of the material. This categorization provides, instead of a chronological reading, an alternative approach where the issues that art pieces attempt to point out follow one another based on their disposition. The pieces that I have produced regarding the subject after completing the research were placed at the end of the thesis as works that stretch the limits of a material as a memory-storage medium that takes its form from the stone, completing it as thesis work.
