Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye'de bir üniversitenin kurum içi hazırlamış olduğu Mentora English A2 ders kitabının okuma bölümlerini değerlendirmektir. Çalışma iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. İlk bölümde, öğrenci ve öğretmenlerin algıları değerlendirilmiş ve daha sonra bu iki grubun görüşleri karşılaştırılmıştır. Çalışmanın bu ilk bölümüne 202 öğrenci ve 49 öğretmen katılmıştır. İkinci bölümde betimsel veri analizi yapılmıştır. Bu bölümde, ilk olarak farklı okuma-anlama sorularının dağılımı bir okuma-anlama taksonomisi aracılığıyla değerlendirilmiş, ardından okuma parçalarının içindeki kelime zorluğu web tabanlı kelime frekansı bilgisi üreten iki araç kullanılarak tespit edilmiştir. Bulgular, Mentora English A2 ders kitabının okuma bölümlerinin etkili olduğunu göstermiştir. Ancak bir kaç eksiklik saptanmış ve bunların geliştirilmesi için önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the reading component of a locally produced, institutional textbook, Mentora English A2. The study comprised two parts. The first part investigated the perceptions of (a) learners and (b) teachers about the effectiveness of the reading component of the textbook, and then it (c) compared the student and teacher perceptions. 202 students and 49 teachers participated in this part of the study. The second part was a descriptive analysis of (a) the distribution of different comprehension question types and (b) the vocabulary load of the reading texts. The distribution of different comprehension question types was analysed using a taxonomy of comprehension questions, and the vocabulary load of the texts was analysed using two web tools that provide data on frequencies. The findings showed that the reading component of Mentora English A2 was effective. However, some issues were detected and suggestions have been made to further improve this textbook.
