Özet (Çeviri)

Desert vernacular architecture has always been part of the sustainable building cycle. However, desert is not the best environment to develop a sustainable design due to its aggressive climate conditions. On the other hand, people have always been able to create comfortable living spaces for themselves throughout the history in such environments, even though they have never been benefited from today's massive technology. So how do these structures, which were built in the past provide solutions to such challenging environmental conditions and have been survived until today? Their designs have provided them rational solutions in terms of not only material selection but also positioning and shaping of buildings. In this paper, I would like to discuss about what architects can achieve by harmonizing today's technology and the whole development cycle of the desert architecture since their first designs. I do believe that those fascinating designs throughout the history can be an inspiration to today's architectural designs and contribute to create more sustainable and energy efficient buildings and environmental designs. In last part of my thesis, I would like to discuss about a particular case study about the Atacama Desert. The master thesis project Atacama Space Center is devoted to the topic of space debris, and the building is trying to deal with environmental impact by using a contemporary design. Atacama Space Center has a modern-looking design on the contrary to the vernacular desert architecture. However, the main idea of the model is still the same because they are both dealing with harsh environmental conditions, and this fact is used as a basis of the design. Nowadays, people are seeking modern living facilities, and the question is that is it possible to achieve this in any condition without damaging the environment? Having an original design is also about having smart, innovative structure-natural solutions, choosing materials and everything else about the building. The relationship between architecture, technology and sustainability are the keywords of the design process. Today, our buildings and cities should be able to respond to the burgeoning of the global population and improved living standards, and, at the same time, cope with diminishing natural resources and destructive environmental impacts that restrict the location and design of our built environments. 7 This work focuses its reflection on the spatial and formal relationship between the conditions of extreme harsh environment and the expression of an appropriate architecture where the contemporary notions of the desert landscape and sustainable architecture intersect. Various passive methods and strategies can give the desert dwellings, adaptation, efficiency, and durability in extreme weather conditions of the desert and can be a great source of architectural inspiration for new projects.
