Background and objectives: Previous research using evaluative conditioning (EC) procedure to improve body dissatisfaction found inconsistent results, implying that the current EC procedures are not strong enough to affect the outcome. Therefore, this study considered the limitations of the previous work by including diverse feedback. Methods: Female undergraduate students were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 66) or the control condition (n = 65). In the experimental condition participants' own body pictures were systematically paired with positive social feedback (smiling faces and thumbs up button) and neutral pictures were followed by a blank screen. In the control condition both own body pictures and neutral pictures were followed by a blank screen. Changes in body satisfaction, mood and self-esteem were reviewed. Results: EC task was not strong enough to transfer its effects on self-reported indices of body satisfaction nor global measures such as self-esteem and mood. Additionally, body concern did not moderate the effect of condition on body satisfaction. As opposed to the predictions, the effect of EC was not pronounced on individuals with high body concern. Conclusion: The modifications were not adequate to improve the EC task. As a further direction, Continuous Flash Suppression technique was suggested to improve the effects of EC (Study 2).
