Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a serious threat for new mothers as well as the infants and also partners. Aetiology and predictors of the disorder have been discussed in research studies but little research has been conducted examining the psychodynamic aspect of the aetiology of the disorder. Current systematic review aims to identify and present the psychodynamic risk factors and predictors of Postpartum Depression by examining 13 studies. The themes presented in this review are personality vulnerabilities, remembered parental experiences, attachment styles, masochistic/nonmasochistic dreams, mature/immature defence and adaptive/maladaptive coping mechanisms. Data obtained from 13 studies is analysed by narrative synthesis to bring the different studies' results together and integrate in a meaningful way. Within personality vulnerabilities, higher levels of Interpersonal Sensitivity, Dependency and Self-Criticism are found to be the most prominent factors in the onset of Postpartum Depression. Mothers' failing relationship with her own mother, adverse parental representations and unfavourable childhood experiences are also found to contribute the onset of Postpartum Depression in later years. Findings are discussed in association with the fundamental developmental theories including Psychosexual Development Theory (Freud, 1905) Personality Theory (Jung, 1948) and Object Relations Theory (Klein, 1940). Furthermore, implications are speculated for future research and practice on Postpartum Depression.
