Özet

Jeanette Winterson'ın The Passion ve A.S. Byatt'ın Possession romanları birincil olarak postmodern teori ve feminist eleştiri ışığında analiz edilmektedir. Bu tezde; Linda Hutcheon, Ihab Hasan, Fredric Jameson, Hayden White, Patricia Waugh, Jean François Lyotard, Terry Eagleton, Elaine Showalter, Judith Butler ve Monique Witting gibi çeşitli postmodern ve feminist kuramcıların çalışmaları tartışılmaktadır. Bu tez, tarihsel söylemin insanlar tarafından inşa edilen bir olgu olduğu ve bu düşüncenin romanlara üstkurmaca ve tarihsel üstkurmaca açısından yansıtıldığı fikrini benimseyerek tarih ve kurmaca arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymaktadır. Postmodern anlayış bir yandan tarih ve kurguya şüphe ile yaklaşırken, diğer yandan da geleneksel kadın ve erkek rollerini alt üst etmektedir. Değişen geleneksel rollerle birlikte, hem tarihsel hem de kurgusal söylemlerden dışlanan kadınlar yeniden ortaya çıkmakta ve her ikisini de yeniden inşa etmektedirler. Tarihsel ve kurgusal söylemlerde değişen kadın rolleri, bu tezin ana tartışmalarından biri olan tarihin geçmişi olduğu gibi yansıtmadığı düşüncesini feminist teori“gynocriticism”aracılığı ile desteklemektedir. Bu tez tarih ve kurgunun insan tarafından üretilen söylemler oldukları fikrini hem teorik hem de pratik bağlamlarda The Passion ve Possession romanlarındaki yansımaları esas alınarak postmodern bir çerçevede tartışmaktadır.

Jeanette Winterson's novel The Passion and A.S. Byatt's Possession are analyzed under the light of basically postmodern theory and feminist criticism. The thesis discusses works of various postmodern and feminist theorists; namely, Linda Hutcheon, Ihab Hasan, Fredric Jameson, Hayden White, Patricia Waugh, Jean François Lyotard, Terry Eagleton, Elaine Showalter, Judith Butler, and Monique Witting. This thesis puts forward the relationship between history and fiction by identifying the idea that historical discourse is a phenomenon constructed by human beings and this idea is reflected in the novels in terms of metafiction and historiographic metafiction. While the postmodern understanding approaches history and fiction with suspicion, it turns upside down the traditional roles of men and women. With the change of traditional roles, women who are excluded from the historical and fictional discourses reappear and they reconstruct history and fiction. Changing roles of women in historical and fictional discourses support the idea that history does not reflect the past as it is, which is one of the main discussions of this thesis, along with the feminist theory gynocriticism. The thesis discusses the idea that history and fiction are discourses produced by human beings, theoretically and practically in a postmodern framework based on its reflections in the novels The Passion and Possession.
