Özet

Bu tez çalışması, A. S. Byatt'ın Possession: A Romance (1990), Adam Thorpe'nin Ulverton (1992), Sarah Waters'ın The Night Watch (2006) ve Adam Foulds'un The Quickening Maze (2009) adlı postmodern tarihsel romanlarını alternatif tarih, mikrotarih, queer tarih ve yeni-arşiv olmak üzere anlatı ve tarihin çağdaş kavramsal yönelimleri ışığında değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Yapısökümcü tarih anlayışından beslenen postmodern tarihsel roman, hakikat ile imgelem, gerçek ile kurmaca, tarih ile edebiyatın kesiştiği sınırda konumlandığı için farklı edebi türlerin geleneklerinden yararlanarak sınırları ve keskin ayrımları aşma eğilimindedir. Bu nedenle, çalışma kapsamında seçilen tarihsel romanların analizleri, edebiyat ve tarih açısından sınırları aşmanın farklı yollarını örneklemektedir. Bu çalışma, iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. Çalışmanın kuramsal çerçevesini oluşturan birinci bölüm, tarihsel romanın tarihsel gelişimi, tarih teorileri ve çağdaş tarihsel yönelimlerin (alternatif tarih, mikrotarih, queer tarih ve yeni-arşiv) teorik arka planı olmak üzere üç bölüme ayrılmıştır. İkinci bölüm, bastırılan kimliklerin örtbas edilmiş anlatıları, kendi muhalif sesleri aracılığıyla, kaybolan tarihlerine ve kimliklerine sahip çıkma arzuları doğrultusunda, postmodern tarihsel roman incelemelerini ele alır. Bu bölümde, ilk olarak, Byatt'ın Possession adlı eseri, alternatif tarihlerin ve farklı kimliklerin yeni gerçeklikler yaratılarak inşa edilmesi arasındaki yakın bağı ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla alternatif tarih teorisi bağlamında analiz edilmiştir. İkinci olarak, Thorpe'nin Ulverton adlı romanı, 1650'den 1988'e kadar üç yüz yılı aşkın bir İngiliz kültür tarihini,“aykırı”bireylerin çeşitli perspektifleri açısından inceleyerek,“aşağıdan”bir prosopografi elde etmek için mikrotarih kuramı ışığında ele alınmıştır. Üçüncü olarak, Waters'ın The Night Watch adlı eseri, tarihin ve kimlik konumlarının paralel inşasını ortaya çıkarmak ve anlatı boyunca görün(mey)en queer kimliklerin temsil edilmeyen seslerini yeniden keşfetmek amacıyla queer tarih teorisi çerçevesinde incelenmiştir. Son olarak, Foulds'un The Quickening Maze adlı romanı arşiv ve yeni-arşiv kaynakları açısından irdelenerek, gerçek tarihsel figürler için alternatif yaşam öyküleri ve periferik kimlikleri incelemek ve yaratıcılık, hayal gücü, acı deneyimler ve travmatik anılardan oluşan duyusal arşivin izini sürmek amacıyla yeni-arşiv kuramı ışığında incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, geçmişin alternatif yazılarını ve okumalarını, susturulan sesler adına kayıp tarihlere ışık tutan revizyonist tarih biçimleri açısından sunmaktır. Dolayısıyla bu romanların çözümlemeleri küçük anlatılar ile büyük anlatılar arasındaki kesişmelerin ve uyuşmazlıkların farkına varılmasına katkıda bulunmaktadır. Bu romanlar çerçevesinde, tarih ve kimlik kavramlarının anlatısal ve kurgusal inşalar olduğu tartışılmaktadır. Başka bir deyişle, bu çalışma, tek-sesli tarih söyleminin bastırdığı ve ötekileştirdiği merkez dışı kimlikleri ve alternatif tarihleri merkeze alan postmodern tarihsel romanları, çağdaş tarihsel stratejiler ışığında inceleyerek, tarih ve kimlik olgularının paralel bir biçimde kurgusal ve inşa edilebilir doğasına vurgu yapmaktadır.

This dissertation attempts to evaluate the selected postmodern historical novels, A. S. Byatt's Possession: A Romance (1990), Adam Thorpe's Ulverton (1992), Sarah Waters' The Night Watch (2006) and Adam Foulds' The Quickening Maze (2009) in the light of the contemporary conceptual dimensions in narrative and history as alternative history, microhistory, queer history and neo-archive respectively. Being situated on the crossing border of the real and the invented, fact and fiction, history and literature, postmodern historical novel has a tendency to blur the genres and cross the limits, which emphasises the deconstructionist nature of postmodern understanding of history. In contemporary British historical novel, there are so many multifarious ways to blur the genre conventions. Therefore, the analyses of four contemporary historical novels exemplify these ways of blurring the genres and crossing the limits in terms of literature and history. This study comprises two chapters. Chapter I sets up the theoretical framework of this study. It is divided into three parts as historical development of historical novel, the theories of history and the theoretical background of alternative history, microhistory, queer history and neo-archive. In Chapter II, this study attempts to investigate the postmodern historical novel concerning the repressed narratives of the suppressed via their dissident voices in accordance with their desire to reclaim their lost histories and identities. This chapter is divided into four parts. Byatt's Possession is analysed within the theory of alternative history to reveal the close connection between the construction of alternative histories and distinct identities by means of the creation of new realities in the first part. Thorpe's Ulverton is examined with regard to the theory of microhistory to acquire a prosopography“from below”by investigating a long period of over a three-hundred years of British cultural history from 1650 to 1988 in terms of the multiple perspectives of the“outliers”in the second part of the chapter. Waters' The Night Watch is investigated regarding the theory of queer history to unveil the parallel constructions of history and positions of identity and to rediscover the unrepresented voices of in/visible queer identities throughout the narrative. Foulds' The Quickening Maze is scrutinised in terms of the archival and neo-archival sources to examine alternative life stories and peripheral identities for actual historical figures and to trace the affective archive which is made up of creativity, imagination, painful experiences and traumatic memories in the last part. The aim of this study is to present alternative writings and readings of the past in terms of the revisionist forms of history which recover lost histories on behalf of the silenced voices. Therefore, the analyses of these novels contribute to the recognition of concurrences and divergences between micro-narratives and macro-narratives and indicate that the concepts of history and identity are also narrative and fictive re/constructions. In other words, it examines the works of postmodern British historical novelists, in which they delineate alternative histories and eccentric identities oppressed and otherized by the monologic voice of history and historical discourse, in the light of contemporary historical strategies by emphasising the fictional and constructed nature of history and identity in parallel with the deconstructive reconstruction process.
