Several studies have shown that depression and anxiety are associated with behavioral inhibition (BIS) and behavioral activation (BAS) systems. The study was relied on sample of 110 Turkish high school students. It was hypothesized that the proneness to anxiety and depression is related to greater BIS sensitivity and lower BAS activation. The current study also examined the association between depression/anxiety and rumination. Specifically, it examined the mediating effect of rumination on the relationship between BIS sensitivity and depression/anxiety. In contrast to previous studies, results revealed that BAS was not positively associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety. In addition, BIS sensitivity was not correlated with symptoms of depression and anxiety. Also, results showed that rumination did not mediate the relationship between BIS sensitivity and depression/anxiety. Additionally, the role of gender in shaping differences and relationships between variables was examined. Results showed that repetitive thinking is positively related to depression in male group, while in the female group repetitive thinking is positively related to depression and anxiety, as well. Study limitations and future directions for research were discussed.
