This research focuses on South Africa and has two aims: (1) Provides new evidence of long run convergence between exports and imports—using the bounds testing approach—and (2) examines the impact of exchange rate policy and oil imports on the current account deficit— using the Structural Vector Autoregression (SVAR) model. In South Africa, there was several extraordinary shocks to the economy which have caused appearance of structural breaks. By giving allowance to these breaks, results have shown that South Africa was not in violation of its international budget constraint since there was a long term equilibrium relationship between imports and exports over the examined period, 1960-2015.Alternatively, different from the first technique, by the help of SVAR model, an investigation on the relationship between oil imports, real effective exchange rate, gross domestic product and current account deficit was conducted. The findings of the research mainly confirms the findings of Arize (2002) and Pillay (2014) and concludes that the current account deficits in South Africa are sustainable.
