To meet the customer expectations and stay competitive manufacturing companies recognise the need for moving towards more sustainable practices. This led companies to adopt sustainable manufacturing approaches in their operations. In addition, fourth industrial revolution Industry 4.0 holds many opportunities for manufacturing firms. This paper, aims to identify approaches necessary to transition towards sustainable manufacturing by systematically reviewing scientific literature and assesses the role of Industry 4.0 in these approaches. 32 scientific literature from 5 different databases between the years of 2005 and 2018 have been reviewed and four emerging themes are highlighted. Findings show that transitioning towards sustainable manufacturing requires holistic approaches encompasses all three pillars of sustainability and needs contribution from both internal and external stakeholders. Industry 4.0 holds great opportunities for environmental sustainability. In the light of the findings, this paper also proposes a framework for manufacturing companies to keep track of their transition towards sustainable manufacturing.
