Today, Turkey is facing the biggest refugee crisis in its history. Turkish public opinion of Syrians has increasingly dropped in response to the rising number of Syrian refugees. To manage public perception and govern this process, the Turkish government has identified Syrians and Turkish citizens as“similar”by emphasizing the common culture, religion, history, and geography. This dissertation aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the role of identity in the management of migration and asylum in general and the governance of the Syrian Refugee crisis in Turkey, in particular. To explore this, the concepts of governmentality and identification will be discussed in relation with migration management. Turkey's migration and asylum history are compared and contrasted to see which refugee and immigrant groups were identified as“one of us”and similar, and which were not. This research paper argues that the Turkish government identifies Syrian refugees as“one of us”by referencing identity markers, shared religion and history that are both assumed to be adopted by the Turkish citizens and tried to be imposed by the government in a discursive level.
