Early maladaptive schemas have defined by Y oung as rigid, cognitive behavioural pattems that shape how individuals view themselves, others, and the world and how perceive, interpret, and react to stimuli in the extemal world (Young, 1990; Young et al., 2003). Young et al. (2003) stated that substance abuse is one of the coping strategies to prevent negative feelings that are triggered by individuals' early maladaptive schemas. Recently, there are several studies that have investigated the early maladaptive schemas of substance abusers, as schemas are believed to underlie and maintain substance use disorders. 1n accordance with these studies, aim of this critical review is defining the schema therapy model, early maladaptive schemas and substance use disorders in detail by using existing literature and examining the relationships between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and substance use disorders in the context of the schema therapy model by discussing the existing researches. Within this framework, schema therapy model and early maladaptive schemas defıned by using existing literature, the relationship between early maladaptive schemas, psychological problems and substance use disorders were explained and fıfteen relevant studies were critically investigated in this study. The common outcome taken from this review were people with substance use disorders have more maladaptive schemas than non-clinical others. According to this result, assessing, predicting and preventing the early maladaptive schemas in non-clinical sample and developing schema therapy focused treatment techniques for substance abusers sample have importance for substance use disorders
