This study was conducted to gain an understanding of second language development and social emotional development of dual language learners with German as their second language and focuses on the connections between these two developmental aspects. Three hundred and six dual language learners were assessed at two time points over a one-year period during preschool on vocabulary, phonological memory and social-emotional development. The main findings indicated that dual language learners stay under monolingual norms in receptive and expressive vocabulary, however their vocabulary scores increase significantly between time points and their relative standing among the population improve in receptive vocabulary as well. Language differences are observed according to the home language use of family members and between simultaneous and successive bilinguals. Socialemotional competence seem to be within normal ranges in cooperativeness, integration, prosocial behavior, play behavior and regulation subscales; however more children were classified in the 'risk group' in problem behaviors subscale. Female gender is associated with more favorable outcomes in all social-emotional variables. Low to moderate correlations are observed between language and social-emotional competence; and social-emotional competence serve as a significant predictor of language development at a later time. Implications and recommendations for further research are discussed.
