Curiosity is one of the basic components of human nature that plays an important role in many different domains and stages of life. Although there are many studies that examine the determinants, neural correlates, and individual differences of curiosity, as well as its impact on learning and memory, there is little research that directly addresses the power of curiosity in the context of decision-making. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the power of curiosity on risky decision-making by comparing curiosity with extrinsic motivation. Specifically, we had three research questions: (1) Does curiosity promote risky decisionmaking? (2) Does extrinsic motivation promote risky decision-making? (3) Is the power of curiosity stronger than the power of extrinsic motivation? To address these questions, we conducted a single-session experiment with two different conditions (curiosity/extrinsic motivation). During the experiment, subjects were presented with thirty magic trick videos and thirty food pictures in a random order. Then, they were asked to make a decision about whether they were willing to accept to enter a lottery where they could win a chance to see the solution of the magic trick (in the curiosity trial)/to eat the presented food (in the extrinsic motivation trial) at the risk of receiving an electric shock. Results showed that both curiosity and extrinsic motivation have the power to push people towards risky decision-making. Nevertheless, neither of the two were found to be stronger than the other in terms of their influence on decision-making.
