SUMMARY Bandırma which is located next to the shore a long the Bandırma Bay in the south Marmara division all the Marmara Region, is a central country officiary connected Balıkesir province. It was a ward and harbour of the Cyzikos, a town which was established in the 7131 centruy BC. Thereafter it replaced the Cyzikos when the town was ruined. The conurty was included into the Ottoman territories by the Ottomans in the year 1339. The time when the bohr mineral was found in the vicinity of Susurluk in 19* cenrty was a milestone for the country because of the fact that the borh mineral was exported to American and Euoropen markets via the Bandırma harbour this port currently is the only gate for the export of bohr. Bandirma-Bahkesir-Izmir railroad line, whose engineering project was undertaken by Freeh company, began to operated in 1912. This inplementation gave rise to not only a connection whit Istanbul through both railroad and maritime lines but rich marketing opportunities for the products form West Anatolia. The time between the proclamation of rebuplic and the year 1960 was a complete stagnation period for the conutry. The harbour, with in that period losed its significance and turned to be a small wharf. As of 1960, thanks to increasese population and establishment of a contemporary harbor in 1972, the contry reganied its dynamic industrial and commercial life. Avenues and streets of the conutry is neat and well-planed. Commercial life is quite vigorous in avenues approaching vertically to shoreline and crossing streets. Forthcoming improvements for the scheme are to be made along the Balıkesir highway in the southeast and the upper part of the Çanakkale highway extending to the west. Industrial activates are highly developed in Bandırma. The contry contains fifty five plants belonging to chemical, agricultural, mining, machinery and packaging industries. Virtually all of these plants was set up by private capital. Although it does have some problems in difrrents areas, bandırma resembles a well- ordered city along with its location, industrial & commercial structure and productuvite capacity. 15
