Özet (Çeviri)

The purpose of the dissertation is to examine the compatibility for the integration of contemporary buildings into the heritage context, as the existence of the contemporary buildings in heritage sites seems to threaten the integrity of these sites. However, the consideration of authenticity and integrity in the historic landscape must take into account the unity of contemporary buildings with historic buildings and landscapes. Among the distinctive design approaches, the contextual approach examines whether a building is suitable for the criteria of UNESCO and ICOMOS' National and Local Planning Frameworks or not. Three case studies, namely the Holburne Museum, Thermae Bath Spa and Southgate Shopping Centre, are scrutinised within their heritage context, the city of Bath, with the aim of seeing whether they meet the criteria for the compatibility of integration. While Holburne Museum as an overt contrast juxtaposition and the Thermae Bath Spa as a subtle contrast extension are both considered within the contextual approach to integrate with the fabric buildings and historic landscape, Southgate Shopping Centre entails the historicist approach for integration by imitating Georgian buildings. The successes and failures of these case studies are analysed through the criteria of International, National and Local Planning Frameworks, and consequently, three conclusions can be drawn. First, the evidence of this study suggests that the contextual approach offers suitable criteria for the integration of contemporary buildings into heritage sites, since these projects cannot be assessed with the standard criteria. The compatibility of the colour and texture of their materials, and the scale, façade and the other components, can vary from site to site. Other result shows that the projects are unique in their own contexts and one must therefore assess their compatibility with the historic landscape rather than the standard design criteria. Hence, if the design can be successfully assessed with the contextual approach, the contemporary buildings do not challenge the urban agenda.
