Özet (Çeviri)
The age of Elizabethan drama was a greatly significant time for both theatres, playwrights and spectators from 1560 through to 1603. During this period, playwrights were more creatively inclined to compose works with different themes to what had previously been church-based drama. One key theme in this regard was that of 'revenge'. In 1581, Thomas Newton, published translations of ten classical tragedies by Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger (referred to hereafter as 'Seneca'), the latter of whom wrote in the Roman Empire at the turn of the first century CE. Newton's work in turn attracted the imagination of his fellow dramatists in the second half of the 16th century. In this work he perpetuated the theme of 'revenge', by including more human virtues and qualities, such as vice, passion and tyranny, all related to 'revenge'. Therefore, it could be argued that Seneca influenced the seminal 16th and 17th playwrights, especially with three key dramatic works: Gorboduc written by Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackville in 1561; The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd, written between 1582 and 1592, and Hamlet by William Shakespeare (1599-1601). Indeed, Seneca could be viewed as providing the initial step to creating the 'revenge tragedy' in drama. The authors, Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackville, Thomas Kyd and William Shakespeare can all been seen to have been inspired by Seneca's tragedies by addressing the theme of revenge in their plays. As such, this was the timespan of the formulation and development of revenge tragedy in Elizabethan theatre, i.e. the years between 1560 and 1603. However, there are other important literary and dramatic considerations. Firstly, although chronologically, Gorboduc could be perceived as the very first play to present the concept of the“revenge”tragedy before Kyd's Spanish Tragedy, it is also questionable whether the structure of the former work allows for it to be classified as a revenge tragedy in the truest sense. Secondly, Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy could arguably be presented as one of the most prominent dramatic works in English presenting a revenge tragedy, both in terms of structure and literature. Lastly, Shakespeare's Hamlet could be considered a good example to analyse and investigate the structure of an authentic revenge tragedy following Kyd as well as linking it to Gorboduc. The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate how revenge tragedy drama was shaped during the period between from 1560 through to 1601 (commonly known as the period of English Renaissance theatre (or early modern English theatre) in both a structural and a literary sense. This progression of consideration of revenge tragedy drama culminates with the most recent understanding of revenge tragedy following Kyd's work and with special focus upon Shakespeare's Hamlet.
