Özet
This paper is based on a study to understand therapists' unconscious motivations of choosing to become a psychologist. This article has been discussed according to psychodynamic perspective and focused on the effects of parentification, experience in close relationships, childhood traumas and having a parent with psychological problems. Study was conducted with 120 individuals in total, from 3 different occupational groups. Individuals from engineering and medical degree departments used as a control group, whereas psychology was the experimental group. There were 40 participants per each group. Experience with Close Relations, Childhood Traumatic Events Scale, Recent Traumatic Events Scale, Parentification Questionnaire and questions about parents with mental disorders were given to participants via internet. It is hypothesized that psychology students would show differences in all scales. One-way ANOVA results revealed that there was no significant effect between choosing psychology and parentification, experience in close relationship, parents with mental disorder and childhood traumas. Only, medical degree students demonstrated statistically significant difference compared to psychology and engineering, on experiencing childhood traumatic events. Results revealed that medical degree students experienced less childhood traumas in contrast to psychology and engineering students.
