Özet
The wind energy capacity installed on the earth keeps increasing in order to supply the energy demand which has an increasing trend in general. Since the use of fossil fuels will be limited in the near future, wind energy as a renewable energy source, have naturally gained popularity. However, there are many challenges, one of which is icing, for the wind energy sector to be overcome. The wind energy potential is desirable mainly on the high altitude or on the offshore platforms and these locations make the topic of icing on the wind turbines crucial for investigation. The research done in DTU in collaboration with the FORCE Technologies covers several aspects of icing on wind turbine sections. The numerical models, mainly LEWICE developed by NASA, for the ice accretion on the aircraft have been examined and they have been tested with the ice accretion test by using a code inspired from LEWICE. In addition, the air temperature at the test section of the climatic wind tunnel at FORCE Technologies have been calculated depending on the input parameters of the test. Finally, a numerical model to calculate the temperature of the water droplets sprayed by the nozzle has been developed. Since having the micro water droplets supercooled or not has not been clarified by the literature review done for the project, two models covering the particles as supercooled or non supercooled have been defined. The numerical outcomes gathered from the models have been tested in the climatic wind tunnel with various tests. The tests done in FORCE Technologies can be defined as mapping of the LWC (Liquid water content) and MVD (Median volume diameter), high speed camera tests to determine the physical initiation of icing and ice accretion tests to see the applicability of the models developed for aircraft.
