Özet

Since their first deployment during the World War II, missiles have been used in many armed conflicts and they have made great progress with the help of technology, yet the arms control agreements and the types of missiles used in war cannot prevent serious violations of humanitarian law. The discussion throughout the dissertation has been shaped by the main research question of“how does international humanitarian law deal with the missile warfare”? The nature of the missiles, the legal regimes of the missile warfare and the compliance rules regarding the international humanitarian law were evaluated in the dissertation to avoid collateral damage happening during the missile warfare. Unfortunately, breaches in the humanitarian law result in catastrophic situations where the rules of the armed conflict were violated, and civilians are harmed. The lack of central authority to govern the rules of the humanitarian law marks the biggest obstacle behind these undesired consequences because while some missiles currently have the capability to hit with precision guidance, they are not used much by states during the missile warfare.
