Özet

Urban waterfront regeneration is one of the most compelling design narratives of the last century. Post-industrial waterfront areas since the 1960s have seen as an opportunity area to heal the city's economy and creating a brand new image of the city. Since then, many waterfront regeneration projects were developed to take part in global competition. Investment-driven regeneration of the urban waterfront not only failed to address social issues that cities are facing but also increased them by mostly providing opportunities for certain social classes. Therefore, this design thesis aims to develop an alternative waterfront regeneration method that can address the social issues by exploring the potentials of urban waterfront with a focus on people and culture of cities. Thus, this design thesis developed an urban design framework through the related body of literature, precedents and empirical analysis and implemented the idea to northern docks of Liverpool as an example. The framework started with understanding the functional and symbolic aspects of the relationship between people and water continued with the investigation of waterfront regeneration literature and developed its approach by examining the concept of culture with a focus on public life and finally presented a practical proposal for the selected site. Findings of the design thesis, the main challenge is constituting balance between local and global for practitioners of urban design, the understanding culture on everyday life basis is essential for waterfront regeneration, the urban waterfronts provides opportunities to overcome social issues in the city and waterfront regeneration can be an effective tool of urban design to promote public life and achieve social cohesion.
