Özet
After a long period of aggressive expansion in Asia, North Africa, and Europe, the Ottoman Empire ceased to grow in its territorial scope in the eighteenth century. As it worked to negotiate its new boundaries and provincial relationships, the Ottoman Empire witnessed certain internal problems, corruption, deterioration of institutions, economic difficulties, social unrest, the descension of its military system with defeats, and the lack of a coherent merit rating system in government offices. At the same time, the court initiated social, cultural, military, and economic reforms to regain supremacy over European states, particularly during the period known as the Tulip Age (21 July 1718- 28 September 1730). As the emergence of the Tulip Age coincided with intensive crosscultural relations with Europe, the Ottoman court, the ruling elites, and even some sectors of the lower strata of the social structure were introduced to the European way of life and its sumptuous consumption by multiple means such as building mansions and collecting fine porcelains and luxury silk textiles. This dissertation considers the role of Chinese and European porcelain coffee cups at the imperial court as crucial references which can reveal the new Ottoman collective taste. This subject also highlights the intervention of cross-cultural encounters, the trends, and models of a new consumption culture, and the attitudes and behaviors of consumers amongst the imperial court. This object-based analysis of the eighteenthcentury imported coffee cups entails two types of inquiries. The first relies upon archival documents such as manuscript paintings, treasury records, and imperial inventories to v understand the social role of porcelain coffee cups at the Ottoman court. The second entails a data analysis of a selected corpus of extant objects, based on their inventories from the Topkapı Palace Museum. Both bodies of evidence will be processed as datasets to create visualizations, which represent patterns in the consumption of porcelain coffee cups. Such an approach considers the relationship between consumers and objects and facilitates the discovery of the consumption sphere of the eighteenth-century Ottoman court in the early modern period of modernization when new tastes were being promoted. It will forge new ground for bringing together the study of textual records with extant objects in an intensive manner.
